Sustainability

For Turkcell, sustainability is the focal point of our core business strategy.

We take the initiative in reducing the environmental impact of our operational activities and develop our office practices and business processes in accordance with sustainable innovation principles. From our viewpoint, it’s a part of our business to include all our employees, their families, suppliers, investors, and customers in this process.
Positive Imprint to Our Business
  • We published Turkcell Sustainability Report every year between 2011-2019. We have been publishing Turkcell Integrated Annual Report since 2020. Also, since 2014 we have been measuring our carbon footprint within the scope of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). We are proud to be the first mobile operator with ISO 50001 and ISO 14064 certifications.
  • We substantiate our sustainability efforts through our achievements in local and global indices. Since 2014, have been listed on the BIST Sustainability Index (BIST SI), a program administered by Borsa Istanbul that independently evaluates companies' activities. It provides a comprehensive overview of companies' approaches to critical sustainability issues, including climate change, natural resource depletion, water resources management, health, safety, and employment. In addition, as of 2024, we continue to be included in the BIST Sustainability 25 Index, which was first calculated by Borsa Istanbul in 2022. Our ESG score in the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) has increased by 14 points compared to 2023. With our new score, we are ranked among the top 10 of 282 telecommunications companies worldwide. In November 2024, our company's sustainability rating was raised from BBB to A by Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI). Turkcell is also the first Turkish telecommunications company to be listed in the FTSE4Good Emerging Markets Index, which evaluates the ESG performances of FTSE, an independent organization jointly owned by the London Stock Exchange and Financial Times. In 2024, we continue to be listed in the FTSE4Good Index.
Positive Imprint to the Environment
  • Use of Renewable Energy in Our Business Processes
In 2017, we established Turkcell Enerji Çözümleri A.Ş. with the objective of reducing energy supply costs and ensuring supply security, as well as mitigating the effects of climate change. Since its establishment, our subsidiary has increased its renewable energy investments to increase its installed capacity every year, and in 2024, we completed the installation of 6 SPPs with an installed capacity of 54 MW and commissioned three of them. The renewable energy we produced in 2024 reached a size equivalent to the electricity consumption of 32,500 households for 1 year. With these investments, we made a significant progress in 2024 in line with our strategy to transform from a 100% renewable electricity user to a digital operator that generates its own electricity. Furthermore, as of the end of 2024, we have increased the number of fields with solar panels (green fields) to 2,410. Our target is to create an additional 300 MW of installed capacity by the end of 2026. As Turkcell, we aim to transform into a completely carbon-neutral company by 2050.
  • Sustainable Innovative Products for Our Customers
We conduct studies that help our customers and our cities advance towards a more sustainable way of life, and we realize sustainable innovative products such as Dergilik, Turkcell Filiz, Kopilot, Akıllı Faks and Dijital İmza.
  • Office Implementations
The Turkcell Waste Management Center we have established enables us to recycle our solid food waste collected on-site from the dining hall and office floors from which we produce soil-improving organic fertilizer.
We recycle paper used in our offices and try to prevent unnecessary consumption with our centralized printing system.
We use sensor lighting, energy saving light bulbs and a smart watch system for lighting in all our offices.
  • Recycle to Education Project
We recycle the unused electronic waste of our employees even from their homes.
We are launching a recycling campaign for electronic waste with the Recycle to Education project. We invite everyone to bring their electronic waste to Turkcell stores. In corporation with TUBİSAD we send this waste collected at Turkcell stores for recycling and convert resulting income into qualified education through TEGV (Educational Volunteers).
  • ISO 14001 Environmental Management System
As Turkcell, we carry out all our activities in full compliance with national and international environmental requirements. We also operate in full compliance (100%) with the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System standard in all our locations. In accordance with the ISO 14001 standard, there are no employees or work areas excluded from its scope.

Total Injury Rate Total

According to legal regulations, since we are not responsible for the occupational safety structure of the contractor employees with whom we have made a turnkey work contract, the calculation was made only based on our total number of accidents, including our subcontractor.

In the calculations, we considered our daily working hours as 8 hours, and our working days in 2023 were taken as 252 days.

The total number of accidents/injuries, including the subcontractor, was taken as 22, and our total number of employees at the end of the year was taken as 6,382.

The Accident Frequency Rate we used in reporting expresses the number of occupational accidents occurring in 1 million working hours over a certain period. It is calculated as follows:

Accident Frequency Rate = [(Total Number of Accidents in a Year / Total Working Hours) * 1,000,000]

(22 / (252 * 8 * 6,382)) * 1,000,000 = 1.71
